A plethora of run support made it an easy first professional win for rookie Hoshi.

Tokyo took Yokohama starter Kubo to the mat in the first, scoring a total of five runs. Hits by Sakaguchi and Fujii plus a walk for Yamada loaded the bases for Yuhei, who hit a double to left to score two. Kubo then walked Balentien to load up the bases again, then Ugumori sent another home thanks to some ball-bobbling by third baseman Miyazaki. Next a grounder from Nakamura scored another run, and the final run of the inning, which put the birds up five nothing, came via an RBI from Yachi.

Things were not going Kubo’s way, but Tokyo’s Hoshi certainly wasn’t looking impervious himself, giving up two in the first (and considering he loaded the cases right before Tsutsugo came up to bat, things could’ve been even worse).

The Swallows added some insurance runs in the second, though. Yamada, who seems to have Snapped Out Of It this weekend, hit one to the fence for a triple. He was followed up by Yuhei, who brought him in with a double to make it six. After a Balentien single, Ugumori got caught up in a double play, but Yuhei made it home to give Yakult seven on the board.

Yokohama managed to score another run off Hoshi in the second, but his victory was pretty much assured thereafter, as he pitched a scoreless third, fourth and fifth before being replaced in the sixth.

More Swallows run-getting occurred in the fifth (Sakaguchi RBI), eighth (Nakamura RBI) and ninth (Sakaguchi and Yuhei RBIs). Meanwhile, Yokohama managed to score a couple off Ishiyama in the bottom of the eighth, but it wasn’t enough to move the needle from what was pretty much an assured Swallows victory. Final score: 5-12 Tokyo.

Game notes:

  • Messrs. Sakaguchi and Yuhei had an excellent day, with four hits and multiple RBIs each.
  • Yamada had two hits, including a triple. His average is now .221.
  • The next series starts Tuesday, May 9 vs. Hiroshima at Jingu.
  • Let’s everybody hit the ball that much every game from on, cool?
