On a beautiful evening at Jingu, every single Swallow starter had a hit, Ishikawa was serviceable for five innings after two subpar starts, the bullpen held the lead, and the Swallows took two of three games from the Carp.

The starters for this game were Ishikawa for the Swallows, Fukui for the Carp. In his two previous starts against Hiroshima this season, Ishikawa had a 1-1 record and a 2.77 ERA in thirteen innings of work. Fukui for the Carp was making his second start of the season.

Swallows highlights

Bottom of the fourth inning; with two runners on and two outs, Fujii and Yamada both stepped up with  timely hits with two outs to increase the Tokyo lead to 4-2 Swallows

Bottom of the sixth inning: after Kondoh relieved starter Ishikawa and got through a jam in the Hiroshima half of the inning, the Swallows offense quickly got back to work in the home half of the inning with three more runs. After an error by Carp third baseman Pena, the Swallows had two on and two out with Yamada at the plate. Yamada answered with a timely RBI single, followed by a two run double by Yuhei to make it 7-2 Swallows

Top of the eighth inning; Hiroshima scored a run zzzzzzzzz 7-3 Swallows

Bottom of the eighth; the Swallows exploded for five runs as Yuhei had a two run double, Takeuchi singled in a run, and Ohbiki followed with a two run double to cap an impressive offensive showing for the Swallows. 12-3 Swallows

Despite the fireworks on offense, the highlight of this game came on defense for the Swallows as third baseman Fujii charged in to catch the bunt attempt AND throw out the first base runner.  You’ll see this again on the DVD at season-end. (Image courtesy of Senor Watkins)

News and Notes

– The Swallows had at least one hit in each inning.

– Yamada has four hits for the first time this season and is hitting .348 in the last week.

– The Swallows are off to Matsuyama in Ehime prefecture for two game weekend series against Chunichi. Ogawa starts for the Swallows in the first game, Matayoshi for Chunichi.
