The encouraging signs of the offense waking up last night turned out to be a false alarm as the Swallows wasted another fine pitching performance and were shutout by in Nagoya.

The starters in this game were Juri Hara for the Swallows making his first start of the season and Matayoshi for Chunichi. Exactly two weeks ago at Jingu, Matayoshi went eight innings against the Swallows; fingers crossed this game wouldn’t be a repeat of that night.

After the Swallows went down in order in the first inning, Chunichi quickly went to work against Hara. Kamezawa singled to left and reached second on a Balentien error. In classic Japanese form, the next batter sacrificed him to third base in the first inning… against a pitcher making his first start of the year… against an offense struggling to put runs on the board… but I digress. Ohshima hit an RBI single to score Kamezawa. Ohshima then came around to score himself on an RBI single by Viciedo. 2-0 Chunichi

And that was all the scoring on the night. Both starting pitchers had very good starts, Matayoshi won his first game as a starter, and neither bullpen allowed a run.

For the Swallows, Hara gave up only one earned run in five innings, Kondoh threw two shutout innings, and reliever Tetsuya Yamamoto came in and made his first appearance since 2015 with a scoreless eighth inning.

News and Notes

  • The top five hitters in the Swallows lineup went a combined one for nineteen on the night.
  • Not that Chunichi were much better. After the first inning, Chunichi batters went one for twenty-one with one hit, one walk, and one hit by pitch. I feel sorry for anybody who had to watch this game tonight.
  • In addition to Swallows pitcher Yamamoto, light hitting power hitter Takeuchi made his first team season debut after he was called up earlier in the day. He took the place of backup outfielder Hiyane.
  • With the loss, the Swallows are back in the Central League cellar.
  • The Swallow start a three game series against the hated Gomiuri Giants on Friday at Jingu. Ishikawa starts for the Swallows, Mikolas starts for the hated ones.
