While all eyes were on the Carp-Giants contest at Tokyo Dome, your Birds won an easy game against Hanshin.

W: Sugiura (3-2; 6.56 ERA)
L: Nomi (8-11; 3.57 ERA)

Despite scoring first, the Tigers were not able to handle Yamada. All you need to know is that he was 3-4 with three home runs and a walk.

The visitors were in this game for precisely half an inning. Takayama doubled in Hanshin’s only run in the top of the first.

0-1 Hanshin

But then Yamada amassed five RBI.

After Sakaguchi and Kawabata singled in the first, Yamada launched a 1-2 heater into the left-center bleachers.

3-1 Tokyo

In the third inning he hit a solo shot, again into the visitor’s section.

Yamada was 3-4 at the plate. 3 HR, 5 RBI, 1 BB, 4 runs scored.

Yamada was 3-4 at the plate. 3 HR, 5 RBI, 1 BB, 4 runs scored.

4-1 Tokyo

And in the seventh, he hit another solo homer which gave the Swallows a four run advantage.

After that the rest of the lineup started to help a bit more. Ugumori drove in a run two batters after Yamada’s third blast, and Nishiura drove in two after Yuhei singled.

8-1 Tokyo

Yamada was also a party to Tokyo’s final run. After drawing a walk, he scored from first on Araki’s double to the wall in right.

Unfortunately, Yokohama also won, so the Swallows didn’t make up any ground. They still sit 3.5 games behind the final playoff spot.

But congratulations to the Hiroshima Carp, 2016 Central League Champions! Thank you for winning the pennant at Yomiuri’s home ground. And good luck staying sharp between now and the beginning of your first playoff series more than a month from now.

The Tokyo Swallows will face the Hanshin Tigers again tomorrow at Jingu Stadium. There are 11 games left in the regular season, and Tokyo needs to win most of them if they hope for postseason baseball.

This is really weird. I’ve been to both of Mo Vaughn’s 3 home run games, and now I’ve been to both of Yamada’s (regular season) 3 home run games…
