The Swallows continued their dismal start to the season and staked their claim as the only winless team in Japanese professional baseball.

The Scoring:

Second inning: With the bases loaded and one out, Umeno singled to right to drive in two runs. 2-0 Hanshin

Fourth inning: Hatake reached first base on Hague’s error. Yuhei singled to center to make it runners on first and second, nobody out. Hatake reached third on Imanami’s ground out and scored on Ueda’s ground out. 2-1 Hanshin

Fifth inning: With runners on first and second with one out, Mauro Gomez belted a three run home run, his second of this young season. Tateyama stuck around to finish the fifth inning to end this dismal start. 5-1 Hanshin

Seventh inning: Hague scored on Gomez’s sacrifice fly. 6-1 Hanshin

Ninth inning: the Swallows scored a consolation run off Fujinami. If anything, the Swallows made Fujinami throw 149 pitches in his first start. 6-2 Hanshin


Fujinami scattered eight hits through 8 2/3 innings striking out four, allowing two runs (one earned) and throwing 149 pitches.

Tateyama gave up five runs and took the loss in his season debut.

  • For the first time in nine seasons, the birds have dropped four straight games to start the season.
