FYGYomiuri Giants 4

Tokyo Swallows 6

Streak: Won 1  Last 5: WWWLW

(Meiji Jingu Stadium)

Revenge. The Birds got back to their winning ways in Tateyama’s triumphant return to Giant-slaying. He gave us four innings of vintage Tateyama, then tossed in an Oshimoto-esque 5th inning as a deep cut for the old-timers, but it was good to see the Tsubamegun‘s favorite starter out there again – all surgically enhanced.

W: Akiyoshi (5-0-0); L: Sugano (6-6-0); S: Barnette (1-0-17)

Top of the first. How does Tateyama announce his return? Three pitches, three strikes on Chono. Chono’s name sounds like an insult anyway, so nothing more need be added.

Up next, Tateoka. He doubled. Then Sakamoto and Abe walked. Things were worrying.

Takahashi. Struck out on five pitches. Donoue grounded out. Phew!

Bottom of the first. Early run support. Yamada led of with a double in a nine-pitch at-bat. Ueda reached first on an error by Sugano. Kawabata grounded to the four-slot, driving in a run. 1-0 Tokyo.

Top of the second. Murata, strike out. Aikawa, who once caught Tateyama, single. Sugano, sac-bunt. Chono, ground-out.

Top of the third. Tateoka, ground-out. Sakamoto, double. Abe, broken-bat ground-out, advancing Sakamoto to third. Takahashi, HBP, then stole second. Donoue, walk. Bases loaded. Murata, pop-out. Tateyama, you’re making us nervous.

Top of the fourth. Aikawa, single. Sugano, sac-bunt. Chono, ground-out, advancing Aikawa. Tateoka, pop-out. Another squeaker.

Bottom of the fourth. Runs! Kawabata, Hatakeyama, and Dening all hit to load the bases. Yuhei popped out, but Kawabata scored. Ohbiki grounded out, but drove Hatakeyama in. 3-0 Tokyo.

Top of the fifth. Sakamoto hit, Abe walked, Takahashi hit a three-run home run, Donoue doubled, Tateyama’s day was done. 99 pitches, seven hits, four BB, one HBP, three runs vs. two Ks.

Akiyoshi took over. Murata grounded Donoue to third. Aikawa sac-bunted him in. 4-3 Yomiuri.

Bottom of the fifth. Morioka reached first on an error. Yamada homered to left. 5-4 Tokyo.

Bottom of the seventh. Sugano still pitching. Nakamura singled, Hiyane sac-bunted him to second, Yamada walked. Ueda hit an RBI single to right. 6-4 Tokyo, Final.
