July 9th 2014, vs Chunichi

Chunichi LogoChunichi Dragons 5

Tokyo Swallows 0

Streak: Lost 1   Last 5: LLWWL

(Meiji Jingu Stadium)

The Swallows decided to go ahead an play in steady rain, and somehow managed to play just enough baseball to make the result stick. Unfortunately the result was a quick loss that ironically probably would’ve gotten annulled had the Swallows played worse and let more time pass.

The rain was steady enough that the the start of the game was delayed 30 minutes. The rain was still falling when the game was started. Ishiyama gave up a lead off single to Oshima but managed to get the runner on a subsequent pick off. The pickoff proved to be important as Ishiyama gave up a homer to Morino. 1-0 Dragons

In the third inning, Ishiyama lead off the inning with an Oshima walk. Oshima was bunted over to second, which ultimately proved meaningless as he came home on a monster homer by Luna. Luna’s homer traveled over the foul pole and was reviewed to make sure the ball landed in fair territory. 3-0 Dragons

Meanwhile the Swallows offense wasn’t getting much off of Yudai. The Swallows went down in order the first two innings. They finally got their first hit in the third with one out but ended it up bunting away and out and failinbg to cash in. It was starting to seem like the Swallows best chance would be to slow down the game enough to get the game called before it became official, and to try again in the fall.

Unfortunately the teams soldiered on and the Dragons added another run in the form of a Morino solo shot in the fifth. 5-0 Dragons

Having reached the bottom of the fifth inning the umpires seemed determined to see this one through to the minimum innings to make a game official. The field and the mound was getting dangerously muddy but the umps played on. The Swallows obliged by going down in order and making the game official. The teams did come out onto the field for the sixth inning and Iwahashi threw a single pitch, but the game was called off as the field was clearly not fit to play. 5-0 Dragons FINAL

Not a pretty game. Ishiyama gave up 6 hits over five innings of work, of which 3 were home runs. Yudai was credited with a complete game shutout. The game lasted 1 hour and 53 minutes from its 18:30 start time and only 9411 people bothered to show up. The teams will attempt to play the rubber match tomorrow, although rain is once again being predicted for tomorrow evening.
