FYGYomiuri Giants 6

Tokyo Swallows 7

Streak: Won 2  Last 5: TWLWW

(Meiji Jingu Stadium)

W: Matsuoka (2-3); L: Miyaguni (6-7); S: Ishiyama (3-2-8)

This one started off grand, then turned into a bit of a nail-biter. Or it would have if the Swallows were playing for anything more than a less-deep cellar at this point. Beating the Giants is always fun, though. Big night for Iihara and Balentien, too.

Tokyo got things off to a fun start when Yamada doubled and Ueda sac-bunted him to third. After a Kawabata line-out to second, Balentien knocked an RBI single to left. Yuichi then singled, followed by an Iihara RBI double. 2-0 Tokyo.

The Giants struck back in the form of a Bowker point toward a sweet contract renewal; solo homer. 2-1 Tokyo.

The bottom of the fourth was a big one for the Birds. Iihara walked and was promptly driven in by an Aikawa double on a hit-and-run. A Kawashima single put men on the corners and a Matsuoka sac-bunt moved Keizo into scoring position. A Yamada walk then filled the bases, followed by an Ueda grounder that got Yamada nabbed. This set up Kawabata for a two-run single and Coco for another RBI single. 6-1 Tokyo.

Iihara continued his heck of an evening by leading off the fifth with a triple and was brought home by a Kawashima sac-fly. 7-1 Tokyo.

No sooner had joy begun to warm the cockles of Tokyo’s heart than the bad guys struck back. Matsuoka walked Sakamoto, gave up a double to Hashimoto, walked Terauchi to load the bases, then gave up a two-run double to Takahashi. That was followed by a Murata RBI sac-fly and a Bowker RBI ground-out. 7-5 Tokyo.

The Giants scored one more in the eighth, but the now narrow Swallows lead held. 7-6 Tokyo, Final.
