Balentien and Miyamoto voted onto 2013 All-Star team

Shinya Miyamoto and Wladimir Balentien topped the fan vote at their respective positions to make the 2013 CL All-Star team. Miyamoto garnered 218,719 votes to top the list of third basemen which included CL batting leader Hector Luna (Dragons). This marks the second time that Miyamoto makes the All-Star squad via the fan vote, and will be his eighth time being named to the squad. Meanwhile, Balentien lead all CL outfielders with 328,032 votes. We will be joined in the outfield by Yoshihiro Maru and Jun Hirose of the Carp. This marks the second time Balentien has been voted onto the All Star team by the fans, and will be his third All-Star appearance overall.

A number of Swallows were runners-up at their respective positions including Yasuhiro Ogawa (SP), Tetsuya Yamamoto (RP), Tony Barnette (CP), Yuhei Nakamura (C), and Hiroyasu Tanaka (2B). Ogawa beat out fellow rookies Shintaro Fujinami and Tomoyuki Sugano to be runner up to the Carp’s Kenta Maeda. Ogawa no doubt benefited from a bit of vote splitting among Giants and Tigers fans.

The rest of the squad will be determined by player vote (results TBA on Thursday), manager selection (TBA July 1), and a final “Plus One” fan vote. I would not be surprised to see Ogawa, and Aikawa and/or Nakamura eventually make the team.

This year’s All-Star games will be played at Sapporo Dome, Jingu Stadium, and Iwaki Stadium in late July.
