5/8/10 – Chunichi (Away)

May 8th, 2010

Tokyo Yakult Swallows 0

Chunichi Dragons 1

Streak: Lost 6   Last 5: LLLLL

(Nagoya Dome)

You have to feel sorry for Masato Nakazawa. With zero run support, he threw 8 and 2/3 innings of one hit baseball, only to see Kazuhiro Wada hit a sayonara solo homer deep to centre to convert all his good work into his first loss of the year.

  1. Fukuichi (LF)
  2. Tanaka (2B)
  3. Aoki (CF)
  4. D’Antona (1B)
  5. Guiel (RF)
  6. Miyamoto (3B)
  7. Fujimoto (SS)
  8. Aikawa (C)
  9. Nakazawa (P)

Nakazawa did walk 5 which meant that his outing was not without it’s hairy moments, but he didn’t let any of those men he put on base get home, and struck out another 4. Tokyo only managed 3 hits of their own off Chunichi starter Yamauchi, but did have chances to score. In the 7th, Fujimoto grounded out with two men in scoring position to strand two, and in the 8th Tanaka hit into an inning ending double play with men on first and second. And that was about it for their offensive threat.

Nakazawa’s record is now at 3-1/1.47 and as it stands the rookie is by some measure the main man of the Tokyo rotation so far this year. Hopefully me writing that won’t curse him as has seemed to be the case everytime I’ve praised an in-form player this season.

Tokyo’s only hits came from the bottom of the order, with Miyamoto, Fujimoto and Aikawa all managing one apiece.

This is the first time the Swallows have lost six on the bounce this season. Though the pitching has settled down this series, the offence still offers practically nothing in support of said pitching, so don’t be surprised to see that streak extend to seven games tomorrow afternoon.
