8/30/09 — Chunichi (Home) [Game Cancelled]

August 30th, 2009

Tokyo Yakult Swallows cap

Chunichi Dragons X

Tokyo Yakult Swallows X

Streak: Lost 4    Last 5: WLLLL

(Jingu Stadium)

Riding its most recent four game losing streak, the birds looked to salvage a little pride and win one game at home before starting a six game road trip on Tuesday. However, this game was called due to rain after the conclusion of the second inning.

Considering the forecast and the fact that it was raining before the game even started, it’s surprising that this game  got underway in the first place.

Tonight’s starting lineup:

1. Fukuchi (LF)
2. Tanaka (2B)
3. Aoki (CF)
4. Guiel (RF)
5. Miyamoto (3B)
6. Hatakeyama (1B)
7. Kawashima (SS)
8. Aikawa (C)
9. Ishikawa (P)

As you can see, Takada fiddled with the lineup again by switching Kawashima and Tanaka in the order.

And Tanaka’s only at-bat of the game, resuming his old role, was a sac bunt. No runs ended up scoring.

About Christopher Pellegrini

Christopher is a budding sabermetrician and long-time supporter of Tokyo’s more lovable team, the Swallows. He has publicly volunteered, several times, that he plans to buy the team at some point in the future. When he finally runs the joint, it is likely that he will fine any player who swings at the first pitch or sac bunts (unless it’s a pitcher, of course). Follow him on Twitter: @chrispellegrini

I know there’s a lot of pressure to play games as scheduled, but when there’s a typhoon heading in you’d think they would… nah.
I wanted to show Guiel could homer off lefties as well as righties, so I looked at all his homers so far. 4 of his 22 HR have been against lefties, so the data doesn’t really make my case, but then I realized homers-against-lefties-per-lefty-faced (or per AB against LHP) is more important than homers-against-lefties overall (because he gets benched a lot against LHP).
My attention wandered before I got much further, but one fun data point – 8 of Guiel’s 22 HR have been against the Dragons.

  • All those fireworks are probably still sitting out there in the middle of that field…Sunday was supposed to be the last night of the summer fireworks, right?
