Tokyo Yakult Swallows 2

Hiroshima Toyo Carp 9

Streak: Lost 1    Last 5: LWWWL

(Mazda Stadium)

Tokyo’s first visit to the new Mazda “Zoom Zoom” Stadium was a losing one as they got a bit of a thumping at the hands of the Carp.

Yakult’s starter was Ichiba, and thought he did ok early on to keep the team in the game, he came unstuck in the 6th and couldn’t get out of the inning as the game slipped away from the Swallows.

Tanaka came into the lineup at second and Aoki also started, obviously feeling no ill effects from Thurday’s beaning.

Ichiba gave up a run on Higashide leadoff triple and Akamatsu sacfly to make it 1-0 Hiroshima after the 1st. Tokyo then came back to lead off Hiroshima starter Lewis in the top of the 2nd, a Hiroyasu Tanaka two-run homer making it 2-1 Tokyo.

But those would be the only runs Yakult would score, as Hiroshima tied things up with a run in the third, before three hits and a Scott McClain (the ex-Seibu Lion, only acquired last week by the Carp) two run homerun in the 6th made it 6-2 Hiroshima.

Hiroshima added another run in the 7th off reliever Maruyama, and two more in the 8th off Hanada and that was all she wrote for a 9-2 Final.

Ichiba took the loss and now has a record of 1 and 2 with an ERA of 3.635.

Tokyo were outhit by the Carp 14-5, and must pick themselves up for another afternoon game tomorrow. A game that will likely see Yoshinori (2-2/6.061) take the mound for Yakult.

Oh, man – I saw McClain, but I didn’t put it together that it was him. The Carp and the Swallows make some of the smartest acquisitions in terms of their non-J players. Alex Ochoa a while back, now McClain. I doubt they overpaid, so if it doesn’t work out it won’t be a big loss for them.
Stolen bases for Guiel and Ichiba!
Ichiba looked okay. Changed locations well when I was watching – that’s always good.
Shame that they chased Lewis, only to end up losing anyway.
