Chunichi Dragons 2
Streak: Won 1 Last 5:WWWLW
Tokyo rebounded well from last night’s drubbing as they won in Nagoya to take the season series against the Dragons for the first time in four years.
Tatayama started and did enough to get his 10th win of the year, the first time since 2005 he’s managed that feat (and second time in his career). Tatayama pitched 7 and 1/3 innings giving up two runs off five hits while striking out five.
The Swallows scored half their runs in the 5th and the other two in the 8th to take a 4-0 lead. The Dragons added two of their own in the bottom of the 8th before the bullpen duo of Matsuoka and Igarashi came in to seal the win.
Fukuchi came up with the big hit of the night in the 8th inning, as he followed up two dead balls from Dragon’s reliever Nakata with a two run double which proved to be the decisive hit of the game. Miyamoto had a 2 for 4 night and Aoki went 2 for 5 as Yakult outhit Chunichi 9 to 6.
Tateyama’s win puts him at an excellent 10 and 3 for the year, by far the best win-loss record on the team, and his ERA now stands at 2.993. He has been one of the two dependable starters for the Swallows this year along with Ishikawa, and should be in line for a hefty increase on this year’s 62 million yen salary in 2009.
Matsuoka who helped Tateyama out of a jam in the 8th by striking out the two batters he faced to end the inning, now has an ERA of 1.531 in his 59 appearances in 2008.
Igarashi’s good work in the 9th was rewarded with his second save of the year. His ERA is now 2.793 in his 39 appearances.
Tonight’s victory leaves Tokyo 3.5 games behind 4th placed Chunichi and a further 0.5 behind 3rd place Hiroshima.
The final game of the series is tomorrow evening at the Nagoya Dome.
