Tokyo Yakult Swallows 17Tokyo Yakult Swallows cap

Yokohama BayStars 5

Streak: Won 2 Last 5: WLLWW
(Yokohama Stadium)

Well, it’s taken them the best part of five months, but Yakult finally realised that the BayStars are the worst team in Japan this year and finally treated them accordingly, blasting them for 17 runs off a whopping 22 hits.

Tokyo starter Ishikawa, blessed with the kind of run support he usually only sees in his dreams, worked 7 innings of four hit baseball.  Which sounds great, except for the fact that those four hits were all solo home runs.  But that mattered not as Masanori picked up his 9th win for the year.

Hatakeyama and Fukuchi were the standouts on a very good night with the bat for the birds.  Hatakeyama went 4 for 6, including a double and a three run homer, with five RBIs for the evening.  Fukuchi went 4 for 5 with a walk, also including a double and a solo dinger, batting in three runs.

The other RBIs came from:

Aoki (4 for 6, 1 RBI), Ihara (1 for 6 with a 2 run HR), Tanaka (1 for 6 with 2 fielder’s choice RBIs),  Kawashima (3 for 4 with a walk, 1 RBI) and Fukukawa (2 for 5, 2 RBIs).

The other run scored on a wild pitch.

Hanada pitched the 8th and 9th innings in relief for Tokyo, giving up a run in the 9th, but by then it was a laugher and the game was long over.

From a very happy Yokohama Stadium, the Swallows have a day off before taking on the Chunichi Dragons from Tuesday at Jingu.

  • That’s the kind of 5th inning I love. That’s Tokyo’s strong suit. Two in a row, and a big one, and taking a series from Yokohama, erstwhile bugbear of our birds. Ah, it’s a good night.
