Tokyo Yakult Swallows 4

Streak: Lost 2 Last 5:WWWLL

(Meiji Jingu Stadium)

Tokyo gave up 15 hits and 5 home runs as they got thumped by Yomiuri at a wet Jingu on Tuesday evening.

Home runs from Ramirez, Takahashi, Ogasawara, Sakamoto and Kamei did the bulk of the damage as the Giants demonstrated the kind of power that Yakult so sorely lack.  Yomiuri have now hit over twice as many long-balls as the Swallows this year.

Ryo Kawashima started for Tokyo and had a torrid time, giving up four runs off eight hits (including three of the five homers) in 5 innings.  Matsui gave up the other three runs and two homers in his two innings of relief.  The only bright spot pitching-wise came from Nishizaki, who pitched a solid scoreless 8th and 9th innings.

Toyko’s bats only managed one run in 7 innings off Giants starter Utsumi, scored in the 3rd, Ihara bringing home Fukuchi.  They’d add one more runs in the 8th (Hatakeyama solo homer) and two in the 9th (RBI doubles from Kawamoto and Fukuchi) off the Yomuri bullpen.  In fact, they managed to bring the tying run to the plate with two men on and two outs in the 9th, but it was a case of too little too late as Kroon came on to get the final out and that was that – 7-4 final.

Kawashima’s record drops to 6 wins and 5 losses with an ERA of 3.789.

The two teams return to Jingu tomorrow night for the second game of the series.
