Tokyo Yakult Swallows capChunichi Dragons 2

Tokyo Yakult Swallows 2

Streak: Drawn 1. Last 5:WLWLD

Tokyo couldn’t quite do enough to beat Chunichi in 12 innings despite a fine performance from starter Ishikawa, as Oshimoto blew his second lead in successive games.

Ishikawa pitched 7 innings of 4 hit baseball, striking out 5, with his one run coming off a solo homer from Tyrone Woods in the 7th.  The no decision left him with a record of 8 wins and 8 losses for the year with his ERA shrinking to a stingy 2.745.

Yakult opened the scoring in the 1st, with Ihara getting the first of his 4 hits for the night, a double, to bring home Fukuchi for 0-1.

The Swallows second run came in the 5th, this time an Ihara single good enough to bring home Ishikawa for 0-2.

Oshimoto replaced Ishikawa in the 8th with the score at 1-2.  but gave up a double and single to draw the scores level at 2-2.  Lim then pitched a hitless 9th, Matsuoka a scoreless 10th, and finally Igarashi pitched two perfect innings to shut down the Chunichi offense.

Unfortunately the Yakult bats couldn’t quite do enough to sneak the win that the evening’s pitching deserved.  The closest they came was in the 8th when Guiel was judged to be out in a close play at the plate, despite the catcher dropping the ball with the umpire not appearing to see the incident clearly.  Manager Takada and Guiel protested the play for some time but to no avail.

The draw, combined with Hiroshima’s win tonight means the two teams are in equal 4th, three games behind the 3rd placed Dragons.

The two teams meet again tomorrow evening in the same place for the last game of the 2 game series.
