Tokyo Yakult Swallows 11
Hiroshima Toyo Carp 12
Streak: Lost 1. Last 5: LWLWL
An 8th inning pitching meltdown from the usually reliable Oshimoto allowed the Carp to claw their way back from a 10-5 deficit and win a bizzare game that saw both teams combine for 39 hits.
Yakult’s starter was the 26 year old Itoh who was making his season debut, but he lasted only an inning after giving up two runs in the 1st. Yakult then went deep into the bullpen with Matsui, Igarashi, Yoshikawa and Matsuoka taking them through to the end of the 7th, giving up a further 3 runs.
Tokyo’s bats fared better, making 17 hits through the first 7 innings and scoring 10 runs, with Tanaka bringing home 3 of those runs, Guiel 3 (including a 2 run homer in the 5th, his 11th of the year and first in quite some time), Fukuchi 2, and Ihara and Noguchi with 1 apiece.
That seemingly secure 10-5 lead would turn into a 10-12 deficit in the 8th as Oshimoto gave up 6 runs off 5 hits, along with another 2 hits and a run off Lim to cap a 7 run inning for the Carp.
Ihara would bring home a run in the 9th to take it to 11-12 but Hiroshima closer Nakakawa would eventually get the job done and close out the game.
Oshimoto’s loss was his 3rd of the year and his ERA has now jumped to 2.872.
The Swallows now get a day off before travelling to Matsuyama for a two game “home” series with the Chunichi Dragons.
