Tokyo Yakult Swallows 2
Hiroshima Toyo Carp 0
Streak: Won 1. Last 5: LLWLW
(Hiroshima Municipal Stadium)
Yakult opened their second half of the season with a victory on a sticky evening in Hiroshima, off the back of six dominant innings from Swallows starter Ryo Kawashima.
Kawashima pitched six shutout innings giving up two hits, fanning four and walking three for his 6th win of the year. His record now stands at 6 wins and 4 losses with and ERA of 3.797.
Tokyo’s only runs of the game came in the 5th inning in slightly fortuitous fashion. First baseman Takeuchi singled off Carp starter Makino to open the inning. Cather Fukukawa then flew out to right for out number one. Pitcher Kawashima then bunted to move the runner along but Makino made a wild thow to first trying to make the out, missing the target by some margin to the left, allowing Takeuchi to score from first, and Kawashima to make third. Fukuchi then tripled to bring home the runner at third and that would be the it for Makino and indeed the scoring for the game.
The Yakult bullpen trio of Matsuoka, Oshimoto and Lim shut down the Carp offense, allowing only one further hit in the game. Lim picked up his 26th save of the year and is now just 6 saves away from a combined 200 career saves in Korea and Japan.
Yakult were without Miyamoto and Aoki who were at the Japanese Olympic training camp in preperation for Japan’s 2008 olympic campain.
The two teams complete their two game series tomorrow in Kure.
