Welcome Wilson

Wison ValdezNew Yakult aquisition Wilson Antonio Valdez made a promising start to his Swallows career in his debut for the Tokyo team on a rainy evening in Jingu Stadium.

The former MLB infielder from the Dominican Republic, registered as “Wilson” in the NPB got two hits and one walk in his four at-bats in his first appearance for the birds against Orix on Saturday evening.

Wilson also came close to his first RBI for the team when Aoki was called out in a close play at home plate in the 7th inning of Saturday’s game.

Valdez started at shortstop, with regular shortstop Shinya Miyamoto moving to third for the evening, and Wilson peformed well in the field to give the Swallows a formidable infield defence alongside Miyamoto and second-baseman Hiroyasu Tanaka.

Valdez was brought in as cover for veteran shortstop Shinya Miyamoto who will captain team Japan in this year’s Olympics in Beijing during the summer.

All in all a good start for Wilson and long may it continue.  Welcome to Tokyo Wilson.
