Last season’s inter league schedule was not  friendly to the Swallows and the rest of the Central League ball clubs as Hanshin was the only club to finish about .500. While it’s doubtful that results will be much different this year, the Swallows got off to a strong start on Tuesday night in Hokkaido, defeating the Fighters 8-4.

The recently resurgent Yuhei led the offense with three hits and two RBIs while Yamada put in his regular shift with a home run, triple and two RBIs.

On the mound, Kyle Davies put on a strong performance going 6 1/3 innings and giving up one earned run en route to his first win in Japanese baseball. Relievers Akiyoshi, Muranaka and Lueke chipped in to pitch the seventh and eighth innings before first-team returnee Ishiyama came on in the ninth inning to make things interesting before closing out the game.

For Hokkaido, Ohtani continued his impressive season with another home run.
