An unbelievable performance by the bullpen and sheer desperation to avoid being swept by the last place Dragons lifted the Swallows to what may turn out to be a season defining win.

The starters for this game were young, up and coming 49 year old Yamamoto making his first start of the season and the recently resurgent Ishiyama for the Swallows. However, the starters quickly became a moot in this game as Yamamoto left injured after 1 0/3 innings pitched and just 22 pitches. Ishiyama struggled throughout his start, lasting only four innings while giving up seven hits and four runs (three earned).

Top of the first inning: Kawabata walked and Yamada singled him to second. After a Yamamoto wild pitched advanced runners to second and third, Hatakeyama hit a sacrifice fly to open the scoring. 1-0 Swallows

Bottom of the third inning: Endo homered to right 1-1 Tie

Top of the fourth inning: Yamada and Hatakeyama singled, runners on first and third. After Yuhei fouled out, Ohbiki hit a sacrifice fly to manufacture another run. 2-1 Swallows

Bottom of the fourth inning: Wada reached on an error by Kawabata and Morino singled to right. With runners on first and third base, Hernandez singled to score Wada. After a sacrifice bunt by Katsura, pinch hitter Akasaka hit a two run single. Ishiyama’s evening was done after this inning. 4-2 Chunichi

Top of the eighth inning: with the Swallows still down by two runs, Kawabata made up for his earlier error by homering to right. 4-3 Chunichi

Top of the ninth inning: After Hatayama was retired to start the inning, Yuhei tripled to right and Ohbiki walked. With runners on first and third with one out, Dening came up clutch for the second time in four games by hitting a sacrifice fly to even the game. 4-4 Tie

Top of the eleventh inning: as the Swallows bullpen continued to put up zeros from the fifth inning, the Swallows offense managed to break through. Obhiki hit a double off the fence and Nakamura hit a bloop single to center. Hiyane then reached on Takahashi’s error while Ohbiki scored the winning run. 5-4 Swallows

Game notes:

  • Matsuoka came in to earn the save in the eleventh inning. His first save in five seasons.
