Despite a superb pitching performance, the Swallows offense was unable to produce against Randy Messenger and the Hanshin bullpen as they fell 3-1 at Koshien Stadium on Tuesday night.

The pitching matchup featured Randy Messenger, coming off three straight losing starts with a 5.00 ERA on the season faced off against Naruse, a victim of two straight hard luck losses against Chunichi.

Hanshin got the scoring started in the second inning. After consecutive singles by Fukudome and Murton, Hanshin had runners on first and third with one out. Taiga Egoshi, who has been struggling mightily in his rookie season then stepped up to hit his first career NPB home run off Naruse. 3-0 Hanshin

In the sixth inning, the Swallows offense finally responded thanks to a Hatakeyama’s solo home run. In his recent power surge, Hatakeyama has hit four home runs in his last five games while hitting .300 in his last three games. 3-1 Hanshin

Unfortunately for the Swallows, the lone Hatakeyama home run was the entire scoring output on the night despite outhitting Hanshin as they were unable to produce against Messenger and Hanshin’s reliable bullpen duo of Fukuhara and Oh Seung-hwan.
