(Mazda Zoom Zoom Stadium Hiroshima)

If you’re pessimistic, dropping the first series is a harbinger of the season to come. If you’re not, it’s only one series – the losses were close. Today marked Kuroda’s return to Japan, if you’re into the celebrity gossip.

W: Kuroda (1-0, 0.00); L: Sugiura (0-1, 1.50); S: Heath (0-0-1, 0.00)

The scoring:

Bottom of the fifth, two outs. Sugiura walked Guzman and Matsuyama before giving up an RBI double to Soyogi. He then struck out Aizawa to escape the inning. 1-0 Hiroshima.

Bottom of the seventh. Yamamoto took the mound for the Swallows and Miwa came in in right. Kikuchi singled, Mary popped out, and Guzman hit an RBI double. Yamamoto, looking shaky, loaded the bases before he was relieved by Nakazawa, who got Tanaka to ground out to end the inning. 2-0 Hiroshima.

Top of the eighth. Tokyo staged an insufficient rally. Morioka, pinch-hitting for Nakazawa, doubled and moved to third on a Yamada pop fly. Kawabata then drove him in on a grounder for the Birds’ only run of the afternoon. 2-1 Hiroshima, Final.

Tokyo hosts Hanshin for the home opener Tuesday evening.

What’s the scoop with Sugiura? I don’t remember him

    • He was the Swallows first round draft pick in 2013, made a handful of appearances during the back end of last season.

Some people predicting big things from him this year, he’s definitely one to watch.
