(Mazda Zoom Zoom Stadium Hiroshima)

W: Muranaka (5-9); L: Maeda (15-7); S: Ishiyama (3-2-10)

The Swallows managed to win with the same score as their last trip down to Hiroshima – by battering Kenta Maeda like a piece of chicken in Georgia in the first inning, then managing to make the game a nail-biter anyway. They just love to hear their fans swear in frustration.

All of Tokyo’s runs came in the first. Ueda and Miwa hit, putting men on the corners. Yuichi drove in Ueda, Matsui moved the two runners to scoring position when he grounded out, and Morioka walked, loading the bases for Yamada, who, surprising all viewers, fired the first pitch he saw – a slider right down the middle – into the left field stands for his third career home run and first grand slam. 5-0 Tokyo.

Eldred and Shimozuru hit RBIs for Hiroshima in the sixth and Maru hit one in the seventh, spelling the end of Muranaka’s evening. Barnette took over with Maru on third and notched three straight outs, but Maru scored on a Kila grounder to first. 5-4 Tokyo, Final.

Final game of the season is Tuesday at the Tokyo Dome before roughly six months of a baseball free void.

  • This defeat of Maeda was also key, in the fact that it meant he finished the season on 15 wins, meaning the Swallows’ own Yasuhiro Ogawa takes the title as the winningest pitcher in the CL with 16.

It reminds me of the 2007 season when Greisinger got most wins, Aoki was the leading hitter with an impressive average of .346, Ramirez was the RBI leader with the second-best batting average, and the team finished in last place.
