Tokyo Swallows 6

Streak: Lost 3    Last 5: LWLLL

(Meiji Jingu Stadium)

The Swallows managed to score more runs than their previous two games combined, but the Carp scored more and swept the the three-game series. With all the home run talk recently, perhaps the game can be best summarized by looking at two lists, presented below.

People Who Hit a Home Run Tonight

  • Kila Ka’aihue hit a two-run shot in the first inning off of Tokuyamato open the scoring for the Carp.
  • Shingo Kawabata hit a two-run shot of his own in the bottom of the inning off of Nomura to bring the Swallows to within one run of the Carp.
  • Carp starting pitcher Yusuke Nomura hit his first career home run, a three-run shot, to make the score 7-2 Carp.
  • Brad Eldred hit his third home run in as many days when he blasted a solo shot off of Matsuoka in the sixth inning to make it 11-2 Carp.
  • Shinichi Takeuchi got a two-run shot to right in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the score to 11-4 Carp.
  • Ryosuke Kikuchi finished the scoring for the Carp with a solo jack in the eighth off of Kyuko to make it 12-4 Carp. Kikuchi also had a sac fly in the second and scored 3 runs tonight.

People Who DID NOT Hit a Home Run Tonight

  • Despite many balls leaving the yard tonight, Central League Player of the Month (August) Wladimir Balentien did not hit a home run tonight. Going 1-for-3 with a single, walk, and strike out. The Carp pitched him normally, and Coco probably had some chances.
  • Astrid Balentien, Wladimir’s mother, who was in attendance at Jingu for the first time in her life did not hit a home run tonight.
  • Unlike his Carp counterpart, Swallows’ starter Takeaki Tokuyama did not hit a home run tonight. Tokuyama lasted three innings and gave up 5 hits, 2 walks, 2 dead balls, and 7 runs (4 earned).
  • Eastern League Player of the Month (August) Akihisa Nishida started his first career game for the Swallows and got his first career plate appearances tonight. He did not get his first career home run, nor did he get his first career hit.
  • Kenichi Matsuoka, who started Tuesday’s game, came into to pitch the sixth and seventh innings. Despite not hitting a home run, he allowed the Eldred solo homer in the sixth. Matsuoka did manage to pitch a perfect seventh inning, the only perfect inning by a Swallows pitcher on the night. His status in the Swallows rotation is currently unknown.
  • Yokohama BayStar first baseman, Tony Blanco did not hit a home run tonight against the Giants. He did, however, extend his CL RBI lead by one bringing him up to 124 for the season. Balentien trails Blanco by 7 RBIs and will probably not catch Blanco if the Dominican slugger remains healthy. Blanco pulled up lame running the bases and was taken out of the game as a precaution, thus Blanco remaining healthy is certainly not a given. If Balentien keeps his batting average up and overtakes Blanco in the RBI race, he will win the first Triple Crown in the Central League since Randy Bass in 1986.
  • BTW Randy Bass did not hit a home run tonight.
  • The Swallows will host the Hanshin Tigers, who as a team did not hit a home run against the Dragons tonight, in a three-game series starting tomorrow. Randy Messenger Jason Standridge will take the mound for the Tigers, while Yagi will start for the Swallows.
This man did not hit a home run tonight.

    Thanks for a nice report.
Well, the Swallows fell 27 games below .500 for the first time in 27 years. What a shame…
Btw, according to the official announcement, Jason Standridge, not Randy Messenger, will start tonight for the Tigers. Standridge has not pitched against the Swallows this year, but Coco was 3 for 5 last year (without a homer) in 2012. Seems we can be hopeful for the 56th tonight!

Thanks for the heads up. I could’ve sworn I saw Messenger being announced on the television.

Hello. Wish you all the best. I hope that Wlademir Balentien will win the first Triple Crown in the Central League since Randy Bass in 1986. That will be a other Royalty for him.
