Hiroshima Toyo Carp 3
Streak: Lost 3 Last 5: LWLLL
(Mazda Stadium)
Ouch. That hurt.
The Swallows lost this in the bottom of the 10th on a walk-off solo home run by Hiroshima’s Ishihara.
1. Iihara LF
2. Tanaka 2B
3. Aoki CF
4. D’Antona 1B
5. Guiel RF
6. Miyamoto 3B
7. Onizaki SS
8. Kawamoto C
9. Tateyama
Tateyama gave up two runs off of three hits in the top of the first inning, but he shut it down after that. He made it through the next seven innings without giving up another hit (two walks).
In the meantime, Tanaka came through with the leveler–a two run homer in the third inning to make it 2-2.
After nine innings, the score was still tied, and the game went into extra frames.
In the top of the tenth, Tanaka drew a one out walk, and D’Antona drew another with two outs. But that was as much momentum as the team could muster as Guiel popped up to center for the third out.
Takagi took the mound for the bottom of the tenth, and with two outs he gave up the game winning hit, a home run, to Ishihara. 3-2 Hiroshima.
So it looks like Hiroshima is this year’s Yokohama (ie. they own us).
Takagi took the loss due to that one fateful pitch, while Oshimoto pitched a scoreless ninth for Tokyo.
Tokyo’s cleanup, Aoki-D’Antona-Guiel, went a combined 0-14 with only D’Antona reaching once due to a walk.
The offensive player of the game for the birds was undoubtedly Tanaka who had yet another multi-hit game. He went 2-4 with two rbi’s (home run, double) and a walk. His average has now climbed to .365 while interim leadoff man, Iihara, is hitting .350.
Random notes:
Tokyo has now dropped to fourth place in the Central League and is at .500 for the second time this season (the first being after the opening two games of the season versus Yomiuri).
Tateyama (2.63 ERA) is still 2-0. He gave up only three hits and two walks while striking out six in eight innings of work. He threw only 93 pitches.
Miyamoto continues to improve. He had two more hits today and is now batting above .250.
This marks the first time this season that the Swallows have dropped three games in a row.
