This evening marked the first of a three game series against the worst team in Japan at the moment, the Hiroshima Carp. The Carp have only won one game so far this season, but a decent number of Hiroshima faithful came out for the game as it was the first of the year for the Carp at Jingu stadium.
The birds got on the board first with Fukuchi doubling down the line in right to leadoff the first. Tanaka then bunted him over to third, and with one out, D’Antona brought him around on a weak infield dribbler that completely fooled the drawn out defense. 1-0 Tokyo.
Hiroshima pulled level on an absolutely punished ball by Huber in the second inning. That one left the park in a real hurry.
Hiroshima then pulled ahead with a one-two Soyogi, Amaya, Fukuchi punch. Soyogi hit a double, Amaya a single, and Fukuchi flubbed the short-hop thus allowing Soyogi to score. 2-1 Hiroshima.
Tokyo leveled the score in the seventh on the back of Guiel’s homer to right (his fifth). 2-2.
But the fatal run would come in the eighth with Oshimoto on the mound for Tokyo. Soyogi walked and was batted around by Amaya for the final 3-2 scoreline.
Oshimoto (2.08 ERA) took the loss in relief for the Swallows. Masubuchi (0.00) and Matsuoka (2.08) also made relief appearances.
Starter Nakazawa (2.70) gave up two runs (one earned) in his 4 and 2/3′s innings of work. He was removed somewhat hastily after giving up only five hits and two walks (plus one HBP) during that time frame. He threw only 65 pitches.
Fukuchi was the only Tokyo player to reach base twice.
And this marks the first time that Tokyo has lost two games in a row. How wonderful that both losses were to the two worst teams in the league.
