Now that was more like it. With Tateyama struggling during last night’s defeat, it was left to Yoshinori to take up the slack and try to end Tokyo’s rotten string of results. After going 8 innings of one run ball last Saturday against the Giants in possibly his best performance as a pro, the 19 year old went 7 innings tonight, keeping the Tigers bats at bay while Yakult’s bats woke up to give him his 5th win of the season.

So then, this is a definite wobble. Tokyo went down against the Tigers to their fourth straight loss on a rainy evening in Koshien. Their excellent Interleague form is becoming more of a distant memory with each passing game.

Yakult’s starter was Tateyama, coming off his first loss in eons against the Giants a week ago. He had given up 12 runs (11 earned) in his last two starts so things weren’t really looking promising form-wise coming into this game. Today he would give up another 5 (4 earned) as both his and the Swallows’ engines appear to be stalling. Continue Reading »

The results from the first two stages of All-Star voting have been announced, but how many of Tokyo’s players were deemed worthy?

Well, one more than last year.  And Swallows players certainly featured more prominently in the top five vote-getter lists than last year. And so they should given the excellent start they’ve made to this season.

The first two stages of voting are the usual fan votes, which determine the starters in each position for the opening game, and this year for the second time,  player votes. Players from both the top and farm teams got to select another player for each position.

So first let’s have a look at how the fans voted: Continue Reading »

(Kofu)

This is becoming somewhat of a bad joke. Yakult twice held a lead, but both today’s starter and bullpen were found rather lacking as they let the BayStars get back in the game way too easily, to allow them their sixth victory in seven meetings this season.

This is simply not acceptable. The BayStars are a 22-44 team. They. Are. Shite.

Ryo Kawashima faced off against Les Walrond, and both starters pretty much stunk up the stadium as neither made it past the 3rd inning, meaning both teams had to go deep into their bullpens. And as it turned out, Yokohama’s relief fared a touch better than Tokyo’s. Continue Reading »

Ah you’ve gotta love Tokyo. Can’t beat the best, can’t beat the worst. A day after losing the series against the Giants, Tokyo travelled to Matsumoto for a road game against the frankly terrible BayStars to try to get back on the winning road. Only they couldn’t quite manage to find that particular road as they fell to their fifth loss in their six games against Yokohama so far this season. Continue Reading »

sptSportswritingPHOTO2We here at the Tsubamegun are always trying to provide a more in-depth, more comprehensive picture of the Swallows.  In line with this process, we are happy to announce that we’ve added information on that necessary evil, opponents.

You can now take a look at the “Other NPB Teams” page to see some basic info and the complete schedules and results for every other team in the Central League.  (Look for the Pacific League to come soon.)

As with the ever-popular “Standings/Results” page, each individual team page will be updated after every game, with a link to the game write-up when that game happens to be against Tokyo.

Why only against Tokyo?  Because our biases remain intact, and because we just don’t have the time to do what we do here eleven, or even five more times.

We are, however, looking for people who do have the time, Continue Reading »

Just like Tateyama but to a greater extent, Masanori Ishikawa was coming into the Giants series in not the best of form. He had pitched four times so far in June, with a 1 and 1 record with two no-decisons, and a rather alarming ERA of 6.12 for the month. He would need to improve drastically if he was to escape Tokyo Dome unscathed.

But he couldn’t and he didn’t, as the Yomiuri bats teed off on him as they eased to victory on Sunday afternoon. Continue Reading »

After Tokyo’s talisman Shohei Tateyama was knocked around for his first loss in almost a year last night, tonight’s starter Yoshinori really had to come up with the goods to prevent the Giants gaining too much of an advantage at the top of the CL.

And the 19 year old delivered in spades, producing what must rank as his finest performance so far in a Swallows uniform. Continue Reading »
